As part of the "World Project" commemorating 80 years since the atomic bombing—an initiative promoted by the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Survivors Council (Nagasaki-Hisaikyo)—NBC has been broadcasting the recorded testimonies of survivors in both Japanese and English since 2025.
In this installment of the "Voices of the Hibakusha" series (No. 9), we present the testimony of FUKUDA Sumako.

Sumako Fukuda was 23 years old when she was exposed to the atomic bomb in Nagasaki. She was working at a school office about 1.8 kilometers from the center of the explosion. She lost her parents and her sister because of the bomb.
After that, she suffered from illness and poverty for many years. Her body became very weak, and she could not stand or sit by herself. She once wanted to die, but she decided to keep living.
Later, she thought that telling her own story was important.
She was diagnosed with a serious illness and went to the hospital many times.
In 1968, she wrote a book about her life and won a literary prize.
She continued to write to tell people how terrible the atomic bomb was.
She died in 1974 at the age of 52.
