WATANABE Chieko was 16 years old at the time of the bombing.She was exposed to the atomic bomb at the Mitsubishi Electric Works, 2.5 kilometers fromthe hypocenter.
Ms. WATANABE, trapped beneath the collapsed factory, suffered a spinal fracture and wasleft permanently unable to walk. Several days later, she was finally transported home,where hellish suffering awaited her.
In 1956, Ms. WATANABE‘s life changed after attending the Second World ConferenceAgainst Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs in Nagasaki. At this conference, she shared her atomic bomb experience for the first time. Meeting many other survivors and discussing their anxieties and struggles strengthened her resolve to work for the abolition of nuclear weapons.
Later, she formed the “Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Survivor Women‘s Association” with other female survivors.She continued to appeal the reality of the atomic bombing both domestically and internationally.She passed away in March 1993 due to heart failure at the age of 64.

The Nagasaki atomic bomb survivors’group, also known as
“Nagasaki Atomic bomb Survivors Council”(Nagasaki-Hisaikyo) and NBC Nagasaki Broad casting Company signed an agreement.
As part of the “World Project” to commemorate 80 years since the atomic bombing. The project is promoted by the Nagasaki Disaster Relief Association.
