As part of the "World Project" commemorating 80 years since the atomic bombing—an initiative promoted by the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Survivors Council (Nagasaki-Hisaikyo)—NBC has been broadcasting the recorded testimonies of survivors in both Japanese and English since 2025.
In this installment of the "Voices of the Hibakusha" series (No. 22), we present the testimony of Etsuko Obata.
OBATA Etsuko, who was 16 years old at the time of the atomic bombing, was working at the Morimachi factory of the Nagasaki Heavy Industries Mitsubishi Arms Factory, 1.2 kilometers from the hypocenter, when she was exposed to the blast. She was rescued hanging from the second floor, but suffered serious injuries to both legs.
The next day, she returned home with her mother and sister, who rushed to her aid with a cart. Three months later, she was hospitalized at Omura Naval Hospital and underwent a total of six leg surgeries, but she was forced to live with the disability of being unable to bend her knees even after the war.
From 1957 until she was 50, she worked at the "Atomic Bomb Survivors Shop" run by the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Survivors Association, and continued to support the association's activities afterward.
