As part of the "World Project" commemorating 80 years since the atomic bombing—an initiative promoted by the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Survivors Council (Nagasaki-Hisaikyo)—NBC has been broadcasting the recorded testimonies of survivors in both Japanese and English since 2025.

In this installment of the "Voices of the Hibakusha" series (No. 4), we present the testimony of YOSHIDA Katsuji .

YOSHIDA Katsuji was 13 years old at the time of the bombing.He was a second grade student at Nagasaki prefectural technical
school, as part of the ship building department.

That day, After the air raid warning was lifted, Mr. Yoshida and his classmates were leaving the evacuation site and on the way back to the school in Ueno-machi.　He was exposed to the atomic bomb in Aburagi-machi approximately 800 meters from the hypocenter.

Burned by heat rays of several thousand degrees, the right half of his face was missing skin, he was left with a keloid scar that never went away even after more than 10 transplants.

And, he continued to share his experience of the atomic bombing with children both inside and outside the prefecture.
YOSHIDA Katsuji had spent many years advocating for peace and speaking against nuclear weapons.
He had been suffering from lung cancer and had been fighting the disease.　In April, 2010, he died at the age of 78 in the hospital, surrounded by family in Nagasaki city. (Photo taken in 1992)

The Nagasaki atomic bomb survivors’group, also known as
“Nagasaki Atomic bomb Survivors Council”(Nagasaki-Hisaikyo) and NBC　Nagasaki Broad casting Company signed an agreement.
As part of the “World Project” to commemorate 80 years since the atomic bombing. The project is promoted by the Nagasaki Disaster Relief Association.
Voices of atomic bomb survivors recorded by NBC are uploaded to the Nagasaki Atomic bomb Survivors Council”’s YouTube channel,
News movie streaming service “NBC NEWS DIG” and others.
