As part of the "World Project" commemorating 80 years since the atomic bombing—an initiative promoted by the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Survivors Council (Nagasaki-Hisaikyo)—NBC has been broadcasting the recorded testimonies of survivors in both Japanese and English since 2025.
In this installment of the "Voices of the Hibakusha" series (No. 29), we present the testimony of HIROSE Masahito.
HIROSE Masahito, who was 15 years old at the time of the atomic bombing, was exposed to the blast while working as a mobilized student at ShokakujiTemple in Kosuge-machi, Nagasaki City. The temple was then serving as an office for the Mitsubishi Nagasaki Shipyard’s Tomachi Tunnel Factory, located 4.8 kilometers from the hypocenter.
He sustained injuries to both arms from glass shattered by the blast. From a nearby hill, he witnessed the mushroom cloud rising into the sky over Urakami. When he returned home that evening, he found the alcove on the second floor bristling with countless glass shards embedded in the floor.
After the war, He became a high school teacher and dedicated himself to peace education. As a representative member of the Nagasaki Testimonial Society, he worked tirelessly to collect the memoirs of many A-bomb survivors and document their experiences.
The Nagasaki atomic bomb survivors’group, also known as
“Nagasaki Atomic bomb Survivors Council”(Nagasaki-Hisaikyo) and NBC Nagasaki Broad casting Company signed an agreement.
